IFR Websites
Communicating science using the web is a key skill at IFR. For over a decade IFR has been producing websites to communicate the science undertaken at IFR to its stakeholder groups. Listed below are websites that are maintained and/or coordinated by IFR.

- Allaboutwheat
Funded by the BBSRC, IFR and the John Innes Centre have jointly developed an exhibition and website on the history of wheat and the impact this important crop has had on mankind and the planet. - Bioinformatics & Statistics
The predictive and systems approaches made possible by the new post-genomic technologies requires teams of ‘wet’ biochemists and biologists to work in partnership with ‘dry’ scientists - mathematicians, computer scientists and software engineers. The purpose of the Bioinformatics and Statistics Partnership is to meet this requirement by providing a resource base with key skills in statistics, modelling and mathematical programming. - Campylobacter research group

Infrared spectroscopy is a workhorse in chemical analysis, because IR spectra are characteristic for chemical compounds, and their intensities are proportional to the concentration. These features allow us to answer questions such as: What is it made of? Is it pure? Beyond that, the IR spectra can give information about structure and function of biopolymers. - Choosing, Eating, Living
Website containing material used during the IFR Open Days, 2006 with the theme ‘Choosing, Eating, Living’, representing IFR as a vital link in the food chain. The site includes PDF's of talks & displays illustrating the strengths of the IFR's science programme.
COMBASE
ComBase is a major international initiative to coordinate the collection and dissemination of food microbiology data. It is a collaboration between the Food Standards Agency and the Institute of Food Research, UK, and the USDA Agricultural Research Service and its Eastern Regional Research Center, USA.- Computational Microbiology
The IFR's Computational Microbiology Team applies advanced mathematical, statistical and computational tools to food microbiology research. Research includes (i) Predictive Microbiology, a quantitative approach to food microbiology; (ii) Modelling Microbial Complexity and Variability by network analysis and stochatic processes; and (iii) Biostatistical Analysis of microarray data - EuroFIR
The European Food Information Resource Network is a European Union-funded Network of Excellence co-ordinated by IFR, with over 50 Partners from academia, industry and governmental laboratories. Its main objective has been to develop a European food information platform with direct access to the disparate national databases, and the ability for data retrieveability/exchange between Member States. Its FP6 funding currently finishes at the end of 2009 and it has well-developed plans for continuing as a stand-alone resource (EuroFIR AISBL). - EuroPrevall
EuroPrevall is an EU-funded multidisciplinary integrated project co-ordinated by IFR, involving 17 European member-states, Switzerland, Iceland, and Ghana. Of the 63 partners, there are 15 clinical organisations and six small-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as the leading allergy research organisations in Europe. Since the project began new partners have also joined from New Zealand, Australia, Russia, India and China. - Food Allergy Database
IFR along with a number of EU partners have developed a database that provides credible information on allergenic food materials of both plant and animal origin. The second release is now available and includes allergy information on plant and animal foods. - Food Allergy Information
A website, designed and maintained by IFR, that offers credible food allergy information. Some of this is of general interest but it also provides information geared to the needs of the food industry and national authorities. Pia Nørhede and Charlotte Madsen at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (www.food.dtu.dk), developed the content in collaboration with a group of leading allergy experts from the food industry, patient organisations, clinical centres, and research institutions in Europe, together with Clare Mills at the Institute of Food Research. - Food and Health Network
The Network, launched in 2001, is IFR's major initiative to increase its engagement with the food industry - IFR scientists interact with industrial colleagues in meetings which provide a unique opportunity for discussion between our diverse stakeholders (often with opposing views) and our research base dealing with many of the current controversial topics in food and health. - Food Chain Sustainability Special Interest Group
IFR is a key partner and maintains within the group whose ambition is to provide a one-stop-shop for information on sustainability in the food chain. The aim of the website is to be the first port of call for all issues surrounding food waste and to provide useful and helpful information to all those visiting the site. - HOOCH
HOOCH is a 4-year research programme, funded by the Defra Renewable Materials LINK programme & HGCA, and aims to develop, evaluate and support the commercial exploitation of tailored approaches for converting different sources of agri-food-chain waste lignocellulose into so-called second-generation bioalcohols for the automotive industry.
Human Nutrition Unit
The IFR's Human Nutrition Unit (HNU) website was designed primarily to recruit volunteers for nutritional studies held at the HNU. It is one of the few purpose-built centres in the UK dedicated to undertaking nutritional studies in human volunteers.- IFR Extra
IFR Extra provides, in response to industry requests, a rapid contract research and trouble shooting service to companies in the food and allied sectors. If you have a problem, big or small, please contact us. We have experts who can help you with a wide range of problems backed up by the extensive state-of-the-art equipment at IFR. - Metabolomics at IFR
The IFR Metabolomics Team develops techniques for comprehensive metabolite analysis applicable to a range of samples across the IFR science programmes. As well as undertaking the actual measurements (by NMR, LC/MS, GC/MS or combinations of these) we advise on experimental design and carry out much of the statistical data analysis, compound identification and final interpretation of results. - Metabolomics on the Norwich Research Park
This website, maintained by the IFr Metabolomics Team, is a forum for Norwich Research Park researchers with an interest in Metabolomics and aims are to encourage cross-site, cross-disciplinary and collaborative activity and to communicate with the outside world in this important and rapidly expanding area of post-genomic research. - Microarray Facility
IFR is a world leader in the DNA microarray analysis of Salmonella and Campylobacter gene expression. We aim to maintain and build on our state-of-the-art functional genomic capability and apply it to advance the fundamental biology of Campylobacter and Salmonella. - Scanning Probe Microscopy
Scanning probe microscopy methods are used at the Institute of Food Research (IFR) to study complex biological systems that are of importance in food and agriculture. Probe microscopes are used, in conjunction with a variety of other biophysical techniques, in order to explain the behaviour of biological structures at the molecular level. - Sustainability in the Food Chain
The IFR's Sustainability in the Food Chain Platform seeks to enhance the exploitation of food-chain residues and co-products. This will be achieved by developing a greater understanding of how to disassemble plant structures into marketable ingredients.
Event websites
- TotalFood 2009
This three day event provided a forum for highlighting developments and facilitated knowledge transfer between representatives of the agri-food industries, scientific research community, legal experts on food-related legislation and waste management, and consumer organisations.
European Symposium on Enzymes in Grain Processing
The esEGP5 Symposium website was created to help administer the Symposium which was hosted by IFR in March 2008. esEGP5 provided a comprehensive overview of enzymes in grain based foods and beverages from fundamental research topics to industrial applications.
Experts from the international scientific community presented their latest research achievements and progress, inspiring those working in this field. The website contains images and downloadable abstracts from selected presentations given during the event.
NetSci08 Conference -The International Workshop and Conference on Network Science was held on 23-27 June, 2008.
NetSci08's aim was to bring together leading researchers, practitioners, and teachers in network science (including analysts, modelling experts, visualisation specialists, and others) to foster interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. The website contains images and downloadable abstracts from selected presentations given during the event.

ELSA is a major strategic collaboration between the John Innes Centre (JIC) and the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, UK.

International Mass Spectrometry Society
IFR Communications Team re-designed the International Mass Spectrometry Society (IMSS) web site during the Summer of 2002.
