Funding & Eligibility

Sources of funding

Funding for PhD students comes primarily from:

  • The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • Other sources, e.g. European Union, British Council, Research Foundations

Self-funded Students (in receipt of grants, sponsorships etc)

In the case of students funded from other bodies, the Graduate Studies Office at IFR must ensure that the project and the student fulfil the normal academic standards expected of a PhD studentship. For further details on eligibility and residence requirement please download an application pack on the 'How to Apply' page.

Academic Qualifications

The normal academic qualification expected for a PhD studentship is an Upper Second Class (Hons) Degree (2i or equivalent). All application forms should be accompanied with copies of degree transcripts (translated into English) in order for the Graduate Studies Office to make a decision on academic eligibility.

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of proficiency in both written and spoken English - Download a document regarding English Proficiency requirements
